01 · BEFORE YOU SIGN

Your renewal offer
isn’t your only offer.

“The first thing to know is that your renewal offer is not your final and only offer. There's other offers out there that can be had.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

“We have software that we pay a lot of money for so that we can put side-by-side quotes from all the different carriers and show you different plans with each one and what the cost is on those.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

You don’t have to come to the office — the team can come to you and walk through side-by-side quotes.

02 · A REAL SCENARIO

Got a 20%+ increase in the mail?

“The first thing we need to understand is that's not the only carrier in the state of Oklahoma. So we wanna look at your options, but we also wanna find a balance.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group
FINDING THE BALANCE

“We wanna make it fair when we look at employer contributions versus employee contributions and what they pay. So we wanna look at what's available, but we also wanna look at maybe you go from paying eighty percent to paying seventy percent on an employee's premium. It's a good savings for the employer, but it's still fair. It keeps your employees where they're at. Keeps you from losing employees just because of health insurance.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

Adjusting the employer/employee contribution split is one lever — the right mix depends on your team, budget and retention goals.

03 · TIMING MATTERS

When should you start your renewal?

“For small business owners, 60 days is a key number right there because you want to be able to give your employees plenty of time to look at the plans and the difference.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

“Middle market and large groups, it's a compliance issue, so the earlier the better. These days, the carriers are releasing the renewal rates earlier than they used to. That's a big help. But just as soon as you can, definitely.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

60 days out is the small-business benchmark; middle-market and large groups should start earlier given compliance requirements.

04 · WHO WE SHOP

Which carriers do you work with?

“If it's group health insurance, it would be Blue Cross and CommunityCare. They're both awesome — we get zero complaints from either one of them.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

This is David’s own answer, from a recorded planning call on September 5, 2026 — audio only, not the on-camera clip shown elsewhere on this page. On camera he summarized the same point more briefly as “all the different carriers.”

When should we start our group renewal?

60 days out is the benchmark for small business owners — it gives employees time to actually look at the plans and the differences. Middle-market and large groups should start earlier; carriers are releasing renewal rates earlier than they used to, which helps.

Which carriers do you work with for group health?

For group health insurance, that's Blue Cross and CommunityCare — David's team reports zero complaints from either. Side-by-side quotes across carriers are part of every renewal review.

We got a 20%+ increase in the mail — what now?

The first thing to understand: that renewal is not your only offer, and your current carrier isn't the only carrier in Oklahoma. The team looks at your options and works to find the right balance between price and coverage before you sign anything.

We’re a really small business — can you even help us?

Yes — group coverage isn’t limited to big employers. The office works with employers of five people, two people, sometimes smaller. Unlike individual or Medicare enrollment, a new group can set up coverage any time — there’s no open-enrollment window to wait for. Qualifying small groups may also get help through Insure Oklahoma, which can drop the employer’s share of the premium well below the standard minimum.

22% Health Insurance Renewal Increase? Do This First

12 employees, a 22% renewal increase. David Harder explains the first meeting with a Tulsa employer: your current carrier is not the only option in Oklahoma.

A group health insurance broker, not a captive agent

A captive agent works for one carrier and quotes that carrier's plans. As a broker, Spirit Insurance Group quotes every group carrier we are appointed with in Oklahoma (BCBS, CommunityCare, UnitedHealthcare and Aetna) and shows them side by side.

If you're talking with a broker, we don't care which carrier you sign up with. We only wanna find the carrier that's got the right coverage for you for the least amount of money.

David Harder, Founder & President

Can we start a group plan mid-year?

Yes. Unlike individual coverage, an employer can set up a new group plan at any time of year.

The state and federal laws are you can set up a group for an employer at any time. Cost, don't let the cost overload your mind. Let's look at it.

David Harder, Founder & President

Can you negotiate our small-group renewal?

Small-group rates are filed, so the lever is the plan and the carrier, plus how you split the premium with employees.

If it's a small group, you cannot negotiate the fees. It's a matter of switching to another policy. What can we look at that's close, but drops your premiums consistently?

David Harder, Founder & President

Ask us, too, whether lower-income employees may qualify for Insure Oklahoma premium help.
