01 · THE MONEY YOU DON'T SEE

Most people never
see their tax credit.

“It goes from the government directly to the insurance carrier, and that really is a favor for the consumer, because that way they don't have to worry about getting that amount of money from the government before they can actually pay their premium.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

“The problem lies within the fact that you don't understand that there's eight hundred, twelve hundred, fifteen hundred a month going to that carrier, so you don't know how much you're actually getting or how much you could be getting.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

Tax credit amounts depend on household size, income and the plan you choose. A short call can confirm what you're actually eligible for.

02 · WHO THIS HELPS

Self-employed? 1099?
You may qualify.

“Self-employed people, realtors. We do a lot of business with realtors because they work under a specific realtor group, and they are not eligible for health insurance through that group. Anybody that are 1099 employees. There's a lot of people that feel like they do not qualify for a tax credit.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group
TAKE THE SHORT CALL

“It's a simple call, and we'd be happy to walk through those steps with you. It's a short call. It's 10 to 20 minutes, and we can figure out if you qualify for a tax credit.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

Eligibility depends on household income and size, not job title — self-employed people, 1099 workers and realtors who can't get coverage through a group are common examples David's team helps.

03 · 2027 OPEN ENROLLMENT

Miss December 15th,
and your date moves.

“The dates start November first, and they go through January fifteenth. The key is that if you go past December fifteenth, you're not gonna get a effective date until February first.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

Marketplace Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage generally runs November 1 through January 15; enrolling by December 15 is what gets you a January 1 start. Confirm your own deadline — some circumstances (special enrollment periods) change these dates.

04 · REAL NUMBERS, REAL RISK

How much can it save you — and what happens if your income changes?

How the credit is sized

“The number moves because the tax credit is based upon affordability. That's the reason they called the law the Affordable Care Act, and the idea is to make your monthly premium affordable by way of monthly tax credits.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

“A person in their twenties has a much lower premium than a person in their sixties. So, same size household, same size income, but the people that are in their sixties get a much larger tax credit.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

The subsidy cliff

“There's a subsidy cliff that went away several years ago, and now it's back. And that means if you're over a certain income based on your household size and household income, you owe the whole tax credit back.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

“We've had people where it's fifteen hundred a month. That's eighteen thousand a year. Can you imagine people that have received two or three thousand a month on tax credit, and they go one dollar over, and they owe it all back.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

Tax credit amounts and any repayment risk depend on your actual household income and size for the year — this is general mechanics, not your specific number. Report income changes promptly to avoid owing money back.

05 · BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

What should I bring?

“Bring your personal information, income and tax documents from the previous year, and the basic household information we’ll need to check what you qualify for.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

You've never seen your tax credit because it goes directly to the carrier. Therefore, you don't know if you're leaving money on the table or not. It's imperative that you get with somebody that knows how to figure your income properly so that you're getting the maximum amount of tax credit.

“We don't want someone being placed in a policy based on the commission and how it pays.”

David Harder · Spirit Insurance Group

Staff are salaried rather than paid individual commissions. This does not mean the agency receives no compensation from insurance carriers.

How much can the ACA premium tax credit actually save me?

It varies by age, household size and income — David's team has seen it range from roughly $200–300/year for a younger single applicant up to $3,000–4,000+/year for an older couple. The credit is paid directly to your insurance carrier, not to you, so many people never realize how much they're getting.

What is the ACA "subsidy cliff" and how does it affect me?

If your household income moves over the threshold tied to your family size, you can owe some or all of your premium tax credit back at tax time. Because the credit is based on affordability and income, a change in pay or a second job can change what you owe — we review this with you rather than let you guess.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Your personal information, income and tax documents from the previous year, and basic household information — that's what the team needs to check what you qualify for. Exact documents can vary by situation; the office confirms specifics when you book.

We just lost SoonerCare — can you get us into coverage?

This is one of the most common calls the office gets: a household loses Medicaid/SoonerCare and doesn’t realize there’s a fast path back to coverage. Losing Medicaid/CHIP eligibility is a qualifying life event that opens a Special Enrollment Period on the ACA Marketplace — you’re not stuck waiting for the standard Nov 1–Jan 15 window. The team checks your eligibility and tax-credit options right away.

Do I even need life insurance?

Term life insurance is inexpensive — a 40-year-old can often get a $500,000–$1,000,000 policy for around $40–$60 a month. It isn’t about needing it for yourself; none of us are guaranteed tomorrow, and it’s protection for the people who depend on you if something happens unexpectedly.
